Liturgical Ministries

Boys and girls in the 4th grade and up are invited to become altar servers at St. Joseph Parish. Weekend Masses are on Saturday at 4:00 pm and Sundays at 8:00 am, 9:30 am, 11:00 am and 5:00 pm.

What do servers do?

• Altar servers enhance the liturgy of the Mass by assisting the priest and deacon.
• They help set up for Mass by lighting candles and placing items on the credence table near the altar.
• They wear a white garment called an alb with a cross around the neck.
• They may carry the cross or candles in the procession at the start of Mass.
• They may assist with incense and carry the thurible that contains the incense.
• They receive the gifts of bread and wine at the offertory and bring them to the priest or deacon at the altar. They also bring the water and basin for the priest to wash his hands before the consecration.
• Servers ring the chimes at the designated times. After Communion, they assist in clearing the altar and then depart in procession with the priest and deacon.

• Training to become an altar server involves a one-hour instructional session given in the church. Training can be scheduled during the week after school or on weekends in the afternoon. We will work to accommodate the needs of the family.
• New servers will be paired with an experienced server for their first few times serving at Mass so they gain experience and confidence.

Ushers greet people, monitor the doors, keep the narthex tidy and assist with seating.  They also gather the collection from the baskets and place into the collection bags. If you are interested in volunteering to serve as an usher, please contact the Parish Office on 781-444-0245.
