Founded by Father Michael J. McGivney on March 29, 1882 and officially chartered by the Connecticut state legislature as a fraternal benefit society, the Knights of Columbus is still true to its founding principles of Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism.
The world's foremost Catholic fraternal benefit society, the Order has helped families obtain economic security and stability through its life insurance, annuity and long-term care programs, and has contributed time and energy worldwide to service in communities. Social and intellectual fellowship is promoted among members and their families through educational, charitable, religious, social welfare, war relief and public relief works.
The Needham Knights of Columbus serves three Parishes, St. Joseph in Needham, St. Bartholomew in Needham and Mary Immaculate of Lourdes in Newton. We support our parish youth, the elderly, the homeless, the sick or infirmed, people with intellectual disabilities, deceased veterans, and our clergy. Sponsored activities include; sponsoring a Little League team, sponsoring a youth “Free throw contest”, visiting and bringing cake to celebrate birthdays and sing to the elderly at the nursing homes, preparing and serving meals for the homeless, sponsoring blood drives, providing financial support to our schools, providing financial support to seminarians, assisting our clergy at the churches and hosting a monthly Men’s Prayer and Discussion Group which prays and discusses the Sunday Mass readings as they apply to our lives at home, work and in society.
We also sponsor several family-based activities and fundraisers to support our many charitable works. We conduct the “Tootsie Roll Drive” which provides financial support to organizations that provide opportunities for children, teens and adults with a disability. Some of the organizations the Columbus Charities Fund has helped in the past are Special Olympics, summer camps, education in residential care facilities and on-the-job training workshops.
All Catholic men over the age of 18 are encouraged to join. We meet on the first Wednesday of each month. We are located at 1211 Highland Avenue, Needham, MA 02492. For more information please contact us via e-mail [email protected] or by telephone at (781) 449-1492.
