Faith Formation - Grades K-6

Alison Burton, J.D., Coordinator of Faith Formation K-6
Faith Formation Office: 781-896-2542

This year we welcome Saint Bartholomew families to Saint Joseph Faith Formation for Grades K-6! Our Faith Formation program is committed to helping our youth reflect on and deepen their Catholic faith and relationship with God.

Students acquire knowledge of the teachings, beliefs, and tradition of the Catholic Church through reading and engaging Scripture as well as through opportunities for prayer and reflection. Second grade students prepare for the sacraments of Eucharist (Holy Communion) and Reconciliation (Confession) as part of their faith formation program. We also provide sacramental preparation for children in grades three and above who have not yet received First Eucharist and First Reconciliation. Students, with families, are encouraged to participate regularly in weekend Mass to be active in their faith, worship with their community, and practice what they learn and believe.

Religious education guides children in coming to an intimate relationship with God by means of the head, heart, and hands. Knowledge allows the mind to know God through the intellect and information. The heart allows children to develop this intimate relationship through prayer, experience, reflection, and contemplation. The hands are guided to serve through projects of giving to others and to increase their knowledge and love of God.

We recognize parents and guardians as the primary educators of faith for children. Our goal is to encourage and support you in this role. Please let us know what we can do for you.

Sacramental Preparation

Students in second grade will prepare for and receive the sacraments of First Reconciliation (January) and First Eucharist (April / May). Throughout the year, supplemental activities and events such as a church tour, instruction on the Mass, guided prayer, etc. will be provided by the Faith Formation Office.

Catechists (Faith Formation Teachers)

We have a wonderful and prepared teaching staff of around 40 catechists. There is always a great need for new catechists to volunteer. Support materials will be provided. Additional volunteers to serve as substitute teachers, hall monitors and parking lot monitors are always needed and most appreciated. Please call for information on our specific needs and to volunteer. We look forward to hearing from you!

Tuition per student is $100 with a family cap of $300. No student will ever be turned away due to inability to pay tuition. Please let us know if your family is in need of financial assistance.

Please note: All volunteers at Saint Joseph parish are required by the Archdiocese of Boston to complete the VIRTUS Training session “Protecting God’s Children.” In addition, on an annual basis the Code of Conduct for volunteers needs to be reviewed and a CORI background form filled out.

Project Nazareth

Families may also use the "at home" faith formation program developed by the Archdiocese of Boston. The program, called Project Nazareth, focuses on the family as the domestic church and aims to support parents as the primary educators in faith. Weekly toolkits can be provided for families to complete together. Each toolkit will have options for younger children and older children. Additional information on Project Nazareth is available via the RCAB Project Nazareth website.
